Long Bay - a prison history

Devil In A Box Of Stone (10 February 2018)

Words and music by Colin © 1994 Rondor Music (Aust.)

I am a cell in lock down

Treasury of skin and bone

Wilderness to the innocent

Welcome the guilty home

Chain and shackle

Concrete wings

Grind that iron bolt home

Bound by the sound of the keeper and the key

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

 CHORUS

Long Bay spit your salty tears

Rust the bars

And crush the years

Ravens call and the wind in the barbwire moans

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

I see the ruins of the reckoning

Gavel on a bloodwood block

I am the crush of justice

On the lawless and the lost

Tower and rifle

Spotlight’s eye

Mighty hinges groan

Dark confessions and a Judas kiss

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

 CHORUS

Long Bay spit your salty tears

Rust the bars

And crush the years

Ravens call and the wind in the barbwire moans

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

 CHORUS

Long Bay spit your salty tears

Rust the bars

And crush the years

Ravens call and the wind in the barbwire moans

Can’t keep the devil in a box of stone

Can’t keep the devil...

Russell Cox

Read how the man once known as 'Mad Dog' shot his way out of the MRP and later was the only man ever to escape from Katingal. He was on the run for 11 years. Once a villain he reformed himself and is now on the outside on life parole. Long Bay tells his life story from birth til release. A compelling story of a man who was once Australia's most feared escapee.

Katingal

Katingal- the 'electronic zoo' considered by many to be one of the most inhumane prisons ever opened in Australia. But many prison officers enjoyed working there and believed, with refinements, it should have stayed open. The story of Katingal in this book is the most extensive ever written.

Peter Schneidas

Peter Schneidas, pictured here in his burnt out cell, was sadly perhaps the most despised prisoner in Australian penal history. He murdered the likeable prison John Mewburn by striking him on the head nine times while his back was turned.  Subsequently, Schnedias was kept in solitary confinement for years, slowly reformed and was released but died of a heroin overdose not long after. Read his life story in Long Bay.

Darcy Dugan

Anyone who thinks that crime pays need look no further than Darcy Ezekiel Dugan. Sure, he developed a name for himself as the man who escaped six times and narrowly missed another five breakouts, but for what? To spend half your life in places like Long Bay and Grafton where in the case of Grafton he was mercilessly flogged. The 'Houdini' of the NSW prison system Dugan went on to warn all 'would be' criminals to stay on the straight and narrow.  He died in 1991 aged just 70 - a broken man.
